The only son of automotive pioneer Henry Ford, Edsel Ford had a strong mechanical mind that was obsessed with cars. When he was appointed president of Ford Motor Company at the age of 25 in 1919, Edsel had already established his reputation as an industry leader. His easy-going nature and love of the automobile won the respect of Ford employees. While under-appreciated in his day, many today consider him to be one of the most talented design directors of his time. His ability to merge the passion and artistry previously enjoyed only in custom coach work, with the requirements of mass production was arguably his greatest contribution to the, still young, automotive industry. He was zealous over the form and function of the car, the configuration of the instrumentation and accessories, as well as the vehicle's style and shape.
Upon return from a European vacation in late 1938, Edsel commissioned designer E. T. 'Bob' Gregorie to build a car that would be "thoroughly continental". Working directly under Edsel's guidance, Gregorie executed a custom design based on the Lincoln-Zephyr platform. The result was an elegantly styled cabriolet featuring clean, uncluttered lines with a hint of art deco. Powered by the 292 cubic-inch, 120 horsepower, Zephyr V-12 motor, the long, low form with its squared-off roof and trunk and an externally mounted "Continental Spare" had a decidedly sporty air.
Edsel Ford took the custom cabriolet with him when he wintered in Palm Beach, Florida that year and it created a sensation everywhere he drove it. He quickly amassed orders for 200 just like his! The 1941 Continental was included in the New York Museum of Modern Art's 1951 exhibition of eight outstanding automobiles. Of the 400 cabriolets built in 1941 only one Continental came in this eggshell white paint scheme.
